48-Day Kumbabishekam Celebration at Sri Periyandavar Temple

48-Day Kumbabishekam Celebration at Sri Periyandavar Temple – A Divine Tradition on the Banks of the Kaveripattinam River, Krishnagiri District

The festival did not consist of spiritual ceremonies only. The Nattupura mural (folk arts) and Pambai- Nadaswaram performances reverberated in the streets of the temple spreading the divine music and energy in the atmosphere. The living culture of the rural Tamil Nadu saw artists of neighboring villages singing traditional Thevaram songs, Pambai beats and devotional folk dances. With the beat of the drums and the Nadaswaram flying high, the devotees were able to feel divine vibrations all over the area - it helped everyone remember that it is impossible to talk about spirituality and folk art as being two different phenomena in the Tamil tradition. The Raised Thattu Varisai Procession. Having taken 48 holy days of rites and venerations, the Kumbabishekam festival was completed with the divine ceremony Thattu Varisai or the great offering ceremony. People of every status with offerings consisting of fruits, flowers, coconuts, turmeric, etc. would come in a colorful procession to the temple having plates on their hands. The garlands of flowers, festoons and the traditional lamps (vilakku) were placed along the roads. with the enthusiasm which attended the arrival of the procession at the temple filled the air. After the offering was made to the sanctum, the last pooja was offered by the priests thus the ceremony of Kumbabishekam was concluded with all the divine grace. This was not a religious festival, it was a spiritual movement that held the whole community together in 48 days. The people, young populations and their followers volunteered their services, planning all parts of the rituals, ornaments and food offerings (Annadhanam). There were hundreds of disciples who attended Annadhanam daily and meals were served with a sense of love and humility - a real demonstration of Tamil devotion and hospitality. The celestial resonance of the ritual is still impacting the people who attended the ceremony and bringing them peace, prosperity, and happiness in Kaveripattinam and in the regions around it. The Sri Periyandavar Temple Kumbabishekam at Kaveripattinam is a classical representation of the Tamil culture of spirituality a perfect syncretism of devotion, tradition and unity. The presence of Periyandavar was felt in all through the holy rites, the music of the Pambai, the notes of the Nadaswaram and all the emotional prayers of the thousands of people. When the temple shines with the new spiritual life, the devotees walk away with this thought in their hearts - May the Sri periyandavar be blessing to each and every one of us with strength, health and everlasting peace.
